Dr Bill Lancaster
Director 2005-6

Bill Lancaster became Director at the end of the AHRC period, and continued to forward the publications arising from their grant support. The NEEHI website was redesigned during this period. He supervised the move of NEEHI from Durham University to rooms at Bolbec Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; but resigned his post later in 2006 as a result of ill health.

A NOTE ON THE ROLE OF THE AHRC

In 2000, the AHRC (then the Arts and Humanities Research Board) invited applications for substantial funding for a new type of research centre in the Arts and Humanities, including History. NEEHI made an application which was one of only ten such applications to be successful. As a result the AHRC awarded NEEHI a grant of £886,000 over five years to develop as a research centre - in recognition of this it adopted for the span of the funding (2000-2006) the name the AHRC Centre for North-East England History, while retaining its role as NEEHI - and its grasshopper.
The AHRC's grant made possible the appointment of a Research and Outreach Officer and a secretary; and five postdoctoral researchers, based in the Universities of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside, to carry forward aspects of the Centre's research programme.
The AHRC grant also brought responsibilities - to develop historical research which is really strategic. Strategic in the sense that it should be of exceptional importance in the development of human knowledge. Strategic in the sense too that it should resonate beyond universities and make an impact on people at large.
