The North East England History Institute (NEEHI) was established in 1995 as a collaboration of the five universities of the North-East in association with Beamish Museum, the Open University, community organisations and individuals throughout the region.
From 2000 to 2005 the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded extra research, which enabled each of the five universities to undertake in-depth studies of a particular theme or period of the region's history - now in the process of being published.
During 2005, work began on an ambitious scheme to form a major new regional cultural and research centre in Newcastle. (See 'about us'.) The broad range of NEEHI activities continues alongside, offering a unique interface between local organisations, individuals and advanced research into the region's history.
